9/11 Table of Silence Project

3 Oct

Offering of Peace

It was a sobering and meaningful experience to participate in this year’s Table of Silence Project at Lincoln Center. This was the fifth year Buglisi Dance Theatre and 100+ dancers came together in a tribute for peace. Watch, remember, never forget.

VIdeo By Milan Misko

“We have achieved this awe inspiring Ritual Performance because of the ardent commitment, love, positive energy, and generosity of spirit you brought each day, and I embrace all of you for your unwavering belief in peace through art.     Touching the earth… from the sole of our foot to the soul of the earth… One step at a time, we shall change the world…”

With loving gratitude, xxoo Jacqulyn                                                                          (bridging the Ancient and the Contemporary)

one exciting week

13 Oct

This week was very cool for a number of reasons!

famousI made my NYC City Center debut at Career Transition for Dancers 28th Anniversary Jubilee BROADWAY & BEYOND celebrating Theatre and Dance.  This diverse program full of amazing talent honored the iconic Ann-Margaret with such celebs as Liza Minnelli and Rosie O’Donnell.  My brush with fame was topped off with a terrific performance of Josh Prince’s “Doggy in the Window,”  which won him DanceBreak a few years back and how he became choreographer of Broadway’s Shrek the Musical.  And I must give love and credit to Career Transition for Dancers. This is truly a great resource for anyone transitioning or simply in need of advice and guidance.  I highly recommend their services and expertise for whatever one may need.

Then the very next day my choreography was showcased ucofas a finale to the United Colors of Fashion 3rd Annual Gala.  UCOF is a New York City-based non-profit organization whose core mission is to empower youth through fashion.  Locally under-resourced youth are mentored AND provisions of financial assistance, food, and clothing are offered to youth in South Africa who are living with HIV/AIDS, sickle cell anemia and paralysis.

It was a privilege to be part of such honorable organizations and use dance as a means of awareness, growth, and community.

Moving in that direction of commendable companies, I have begun working as a leadership trainer in the The Leadership Program.  Leadership is a dynamic urban organization that enriches lives, emboldens confidence and expands options by building strong leaders in classrooms and communities.  This incredible program is capable of achieving real change in school cultures and I am super excited to work with my Bronx middle schoolers in our afterschool dance club.

Tall & small at ADF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

14 Jun

Lindsey and I are so so so so so so honored to have been selected from the North Carolina Dance Festival’s rich 10 year history to perform at The American Dance Festival’s 80th Anniversary Celebration this Wednesday.  Heralded as “One of the nation’s most important institutions” (New York Times), the ADF’s sustained record of creative achievement is indivisible from the history of modern dance.  We are 1 of only 4 pieces picked for this enormous privilege! Thank you to our panel, which included David Dorfman, Faye Driscoll, and Camille A. Brown! No matter the time or distance apart, Linds and I love dancing this piece together.  I can’t wait!!!!

If you can’t join us at the Reynolds Industries Theater at Duke in Durham NC Wednesday, June 19 at 7pm and/or 9pm then you can wish us luck and enjoy our performance of “A Tribute and Reflection of the Relationship” right here

COME CELEBRATE SOME DANCE!

1 Apr

Celebrate Dance 2013 v 3The Ensemble and I have been working hard this season adding incredible work to our repertoire.  New work from Manuel Vignoulle called “Le Moi Sauvage,” as well as Shannon Gillen’s “On Certainty,” who was the first winner of our Emerging Choreographer’s Contest.  Nathan Trice reset his piece “Conversations,” which is especially exciting since I originally did this piece with the Ensemble in 2010.  We also had an amazing time learning Zvi Gotheiner’s beautiful piece “Chairs.”  Ensemble alumnae Rick Kuperman and Yesid Lopez are also presenting great work.

This is going to be a truly wonderful evening of dance.  It is very rare to see such diverse work all under one roof, so don’t miss your chance! Get your tickets today!

Every night will surely be a treat, but just fyi, Saturday is my more featured night : ) Hope to see you.

One more thing: (if you haven’t already) please take a sec to LIKE us on Facebook @Steps Repertory Ensemble.  You could win 2 FREE tickets to our show! and follow us on Twitter and Instagram @StepsEnsemble for fun updates and pix.

Hi friends.

As Summer as comes to a close new, fresh things Fall into place ; )~

*My teaching schedule at Steps on Broadway is now Fridays 6:30-8pm and Saturdays 4:30-6pm.  Hope to dance with you soon.

*The next open improv jam with the Ensemble is Friday, September 7th 7:45-9:45pm.  This program, which we initiated at Steps, has proven to be such a blast! This opportunity has allowed dancers to share their passion for movement and exploration with space and freedom, minus the constructs and pressure of formal class.  Join us, bring friends, spread the word! You’ll be pleasantly surprised with this gift you give yourself.

*The Steps Ensemble and I have been busy in the studio creating brand spankin’ new, original works to premier at our very own choreography show, “Ensemble on Ensemble.”  Nearly every member of our incredible group is showing their unique artistry and creativity.  Please come see us and our many hats 9/28-9/29 for what will surely be very special nights.  Check out our facebook event for more info http://www.facebook.com/events/350461468375489/.  My piece has developed into something so much more fun and quirky than even I expected and planned.

*Also,  I am now Production Coordinator for Steps on Broadway Steps Beyond performances.  Presenters of all styles and genres of work have the opportunity to submit work for the Lab Performance Series held every couple months: November, February, and April, with potential extra shows added in 2013.  Please stay tuned to http://www.stepsnyc.com/steps-beyond/performances/the-performance-lab/for  information on how to apply and submit your work!
